Northern Water Snake

Northern Water Snake

This snake I’m holding here is in Northern water snake. Northern water snakes are very, very common throughout Maryland
in the mid Atlantic region. They are extremely nervous animals and
tend not to like to be handled at all. I am wearing gloves on this one
cause this was a very wild one. It was just recently collected from a
river just for demonstration here today. But she’s beginning to calm down. Water snakes have somewhat
of a pattern to them. If you can see a little
bit of a pattern on there, which is much more pronounced
when they are very, very young. But as they get older they tend to get
browned out and it’s not very distinct anymore. Water snakes are live bearers, they bear large waters. They can
bear up to 80 young at one time. They’re usually born in the
later part of the summer. They may, occasionally be
found in your backyard. But typically if you live near water, you’re going to be quite
familiar with these guys. And when frightened they dive into the
water and tend to hide from people as much as possible. Woah!
